A leading first generation entrepreneur, Sumant Sinha is the founder, chairman and managing director of ReNew Power, India’s largest clean energy company. He started his career as an investment banker in the US and UK at leading global banks such as Citibank and ING. He returned to India where he served as the CFO of the Aditya Birla Group before becoming COO at Suzlon. In January 2011, starting with a small wind project of 25 MW in Gujarat and a vision to transform the way energy is produced and consumed in India, Sumant founded ReNew Power. Under his leadership, ReNew Power has grown exponentially to emerge as India’s largest renewable power producer with more than 10,000 MW of commissioned and under-construction wind and solar capacity, spanning more than 100 sites across India. ReNew is also the first Indian company to cross 5,000 MW of commissioned capacity in this sector. It is the only clean energy unicorn in India and has raised more than $1.4Bn of equity to date, with a total asset base in excess of $6.5Bn. The company is now among the largest Indian infrastructure companies, generates 1% of India’s total electricity and helps mitigate half a percent of India’s total carbon emissions. Sumant is a passionate advocate for solutions related to climate change through the intersection of business and public policy. As an expert on economic policy and climate change, he speaks extensively at global platforms, such as the World Economic Forum and forums organized by the Financial Times, Fortune, and top global universities. Sumant has authored more than 100 articles in leading global and Indian publications. He is a member of the Stewardship Board on Shaping the Future of Energy at the World Economic Forum and serves as the chair of The Climate Group’s India Advisory Board. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the US India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF). He chairs both the CII’s Renewable Energy Council, and the Climate Change Council, and has been the CII Northern region head as well. Sumant is also on the Board of Governors of IIT Delhi, IIM Calcutta, and the School of International & Public Affairs at Columbia University. He is also an alumnus of the same 3 prestigious institutions. For his achievements in the area of entrepreneurship and clean energy, Sumant has won several awards including the “EY Entrepreneur of the Year, 2017”, “Champion of Tomorrow” by CEO Awards, and the most coveted “Economic Times Entrepreneur of the Year Award, 2018”. Most recently he won The Entrepreneur’s Entrepreneur of the Year award, 2019, The Stevie Gold International Award for Entrepreneur of the Year – Energy and the IIM Calcutta Distinguished Alumnus Award 2019.
